Fellow L.A. gourmet glamour girl, Rachael of Fresh Approach Cooking, is hosting her first online event, another one to add to the steadily growing list of virtual potlucks that are already out there - Is My Blog Burning (the godfather of this whole mob scene), Sugar High Friday, Wine Blogging Wednesday, Paper Chef, End of the Month Eggs on Toast Extravaganza, my own humble Dine & Dish, the recent Blog Party and others I am sure that I have missed. That’s enough to send my head and calendar spinning faster than the whip attachment on your KitchenAid stand mixer, so upcoming dates are listed in the sidebar over there ?
Rachael’s Really Big Cookoff is similar to the Paper Chef, but different. Unlike Paper Chef, which is a competition in which Chairman Tomatilla reveals a list of secret ingredients and gives us challengers 72 hours to come up with a creative culinary delight, RBC is a non-competitive party in which participants are given an actual recipe and the fun is seeing how a single recipe can be interepreted a million different ways. The concept alone pretty much disqualifies me from the event since I doubt I have ever completely followed a printed recipe, LOL!
Unfortunately for the inaugural round of the RBC, I couldn’t participate in making Jamie Oliver’s Ravioli of Minted Asaparagus with Potatoes and Mascarpone. Rachael made her own minor substitution of watercress for the original ingredient asapragus since it is August, which makes it neither northern nor southern hemisphere season for asparagus.
By coincidence, just last week I made spinach and ricotta ravioli for a birthday dinner party at my house, but that entire menu was planned long before I knew about this event, and I didn’t want to post something that I didn’t make specifically for the RBC. The recipes weren’t similar at all anyway, but in the end, it won’t matter because any recipe that is put in my hands never leaves the same. LOL! I’ll leave my spinach ricotta ravioli and the rest of the birthday menu for an upcoming post and wait for next month to see if I can make something just for the Second Really Big Cookoff. :)
Great idea, Rachael, and can’t wait to see/read all the posted entries for the Really Big Cookoff!
